The Fisher HouseTM program is a unique private-public partnership that supports America's military in their time of need. The program recognizes the special sacrifices of our men and women in uniform and the hardships of military service by meeting a humanitarian need beyond that normally provided by the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs.
Because members of the military and their families are stationed worldwide and must often travel great distances for specialized medical care, Fisher House Foundation donates "comfort homes," built on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers. These homes enable family members to be close to a loved one at the most stressful times - during the hospitalization for an unexpected illness, disease, or injury.
The Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher House provides a "home away from home" for active and retired military families of patients who have been admitted for medical care at the Naval Medical Center San Diego.
The house is available to families who are coping with the medical crisis of a loved one and have no local accommodations. There is no nightly lodging fee and a there is a maximum of 30 nights stay.
Fisher House I is a comfortably furnished home with 8 suites and can accommodate up to 24 family members. The home features a common kitchen (fully equipped), laundry room, living and dining rooms, and a large recreation room. The two-story dwelling has one fully accessible handicapped suite and a stair lift to assist guests with orthopedic challenges.
Naval Medical Center San Diego has recently opened its second Fisher House. This new "home away from home" is 8,000 square feet and consists of 12 bedrooms, 13 bathrooms, a common living area, dining room and kitchen with adjoining family room and is ADA compliant with an elevator. The entire house is completely furnished with beautifully appointed linens, state of the art appliances, electronics and furniture. We very much look forward to assisting more families in need with our new Fisher House II.
The Fisher Houses are a non-profit organization that depends on volunteers and donations for support to enhance daily operations and program expansion.
